Wood or Composite
Treated pine is the most affordable framing and decking material and it performs well when it is fastened properly and sealed on a schedule. Cedar looks better, weathers more gracefully and costs more. Composite and PVC decking cost the most up front and give back the weekend you would otherwise spend sanding and staining every couple of years, which in this climate is not nothing, and they do not splinter underfoot. Composite still needs a wood or steel frame built to the manufacturer joist spacing, which is often tighter than for wood decking, especially on a diagonal layout. Footings, Framing and the Ledger
The two things that make a deck safe are the footings and the ledger. Footings have to reach below the seasonal movement zone in the clay and be sized for the load, because a deck sitting on inadequate footings will move with the soil and pull itself apart at the connections. The ledger, where the deck attaches to the house, is the connection that fails in real deck collapses, and it has to be fastened with the correct structural fasteners into the rim joist, flashed so water cannot get behind it into the wall, and never simply nailed on. Joist spacing, beam sizing and post connections all follow the span requirements for the load.
Stairs, Railings and Privacy
Stairs are the part of a deck people trip on, so consistent riser height and tread depth matter and are worth getting exactly right rather than close. Railings need to meet height and infill requirements and be anchored so they do not flex when somebody leans on them. Options run from wood balusters to cable, metal balusters and glass panels. Privacy screens, lattice skirting to close in the space underneath, built-in benches and planters, and a pergola or shade structure over part of the deck are all common additions, and the shade structure in particular gets a lot of use given how hot an Oklahoma afternoon gets.
Repairs, Resurfacing and Sealing
A lot of older decks have sound framing and tired decking, and in that case replacing the boards and railing on the existing structure gives you a new deck for far less than a tear-off. We check the framing, the ledger and the footings before recommending that, because putting new boards over rotted joists is money thrown away. Where the frame is bad, we will say so.
