Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Oklahoma City
Shekinah Renovations LLC removes popcorn ceilings across the Oklahoma City metro and refinishes them smooth or with a current texture. Nothing dates a house faster than an acoustic ceiling, and taking it off makes rooms feel taller and brighter. It is also a messy job that goes far better with containment, proper prep and a plan for the finish. Free estimates. Call or text (405) 532-3348.
Before Anything Gets Scraped
Acoustic ceiling texture applied in older homes can contain asbestos, and the only way to know is to have a sample tested by a lab. If you are in a house from that era, testing first is the right move, and if a test comes back positive the correct path is an asbestos abatement specialist rather than a scraper and a spray bottle. We will not guess on that. Once the ceiling is confirmed clear, the room gets emptied or covered, floors and walls get masked, HVAC registers get sealed so dust does not travel through the ductwork, and light fixtures come down.
Scraping and Skimming
Unpainted popcorn texture softens with water and scrapes off relatively cleanly. Painted popcorn is much more stubborn, because the paint film seals the texture against moisture, and those ceilings often take more aggressive scraping and more skim coating afterward. Either way, scraping is only step one. What is underneath is the original drywall with its taped seams, and those seams and any gouges from the scraper have to be floated and skimmed to a smooth, flat plane. Skipping the skim coat and spraying new texture over a rough ceiling is the shortcut that makes a room look worse than it did with the popcorn on it.
Smooth, Knockdown or Orange Peel
Once the ceiling is skimmed you choose the finish. A truly smooth ceiling looks the most modern and is the most demanding, because there is nothing to hide imperfection and every ripple shows when afternoon light rakes across it. Knockdown and orange peel textures are the most common replacements in the metro, they hide minor variation, and they read as current rather than dated. We spray a test panel so you can see the density and pattern before we commit the whole ceiling, then apply consistently across the room so it does not change halfway across.
Priming, Painting and Cleanup
Bare skim coat and joint compound are porous and will flash through paint unevenly, so the ceiling gets primed before finish coats. Any water stains get a stain blocking primer so they do not ghost back. Ceilings get flat paint, which minimizes the appearance of any remaining variation. Fixtures go back up, registers get unsealed, and the containment comes down and out of the house rather than being left in the garage. This is the dustiest work we do, so the containment plan and the daily cleanup get discussed with you up front and not treated as an afterthought.

Pricing depends on square footage, ceiling height, whether the texture is painted, how much skim work the ceiling underneath needs, and the finish you choose. Doing several rooms at once is meaningfully cheaper per square foot than one at a time because the containment and setup are the same. Why you can usually spot a drywall patch
The most common complaint about drywall work in this market is that the repair sticks out like a sore thumb. Almost always that is texture, light, and compound, in that order.
The texture gets matched to your wall
Knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, and hand texture all read differently once daylight rakes across them. Matching means looking at the existing wall and reproducing it, not spraying whatever is quickest and hoping paint hides the difference.
Compound chosen for the job
Lightweight premix is fine for a skim coat and wrong for a deep fill. Heavier fills get a setting compound that hardens chemically instead of by drying, so the patch does not shrink back and telegraph a ring through the paint six months later.
Settling cracks get treated as movement, not as holes
A crack that came from the house shifting will come back if it is only filled. Those get taped so the joint can hold, because filler alone in a moving joint is a repair with an expiration date.
Feathered wide and checked under light
Joints get feathered out far enough that the transition disappears, then checked with a light held flat against the wall before primer. That is the step that separates a patch you cannot find from one you can.

Frequently Asked Questions
The only way to know is a lab test of a sample, and in older homes that test should happen before anything is scraped. If a test comes back positive, the correct path is an asbestos abatement specialist, not a scraper and a spray bottle.
Because the paint film seals the texture against moisture, so it does not soften and scrape cleanly. Painted ceilings usually take more aggressive scraping and more skim coating afterward, which affects the price.
Yes, and it looks the most modern, but it is the most demanding finish because nothing hides imperfection when afternoon light rakes across it. Knockdown and orange peel are the common alternatives and both read as current.

Fair question, and it is the one we would ask too. Shekinah Renovations is a newer company, but Jimmy is not new to the trade. Every photo and video on this site is his own work around the metro, not stock, and we are glad to put you in touch with people we have worked for. Oklahoma does not issue a general contractor or remodeler license, so for most of what we do there is no state license to hold. For the trades the Construction Industries Board does license, Jimmy has applications in progress and we will tell you that plainly rather than imply otherwise. Where a job requires a licensed plumber, electrician, or registered roofer, we bring in the right trade partner for that portion. Ask about your specific job and you will get a straight answer.
Usually the same day. Call or text (405) 532-3348 and it reaches Jimmy directly. If he is on a job site with his hands full he will get back to you as soon as he is off it. Most people call two or three contractors and hire whoever actually answers, so we try to be that one.
