Fence Types and What They Are For
A [privacy fence](/services/privacy-fence-installation), usually six foot cedar or treated pine in a dog-ear or board-on-board style, is the most requested fence in the metro and the right answer for a backyard where you want screening and a contained space for kids and dogs. Picket and split rail define a boundary without blocking sightlines. Chain link is the most economical way to enclose a large area and the most practical for a dog run or a side yard. Gates are their own consideration, since a wide drive gate carries much more weight and wind load than a walk gate and needs heavier posts and hardware.
Posts, Depth and Oklahoma Wind
A fence fails at the posts. Wind loading on a solid six foot privacy fence is substantial in this part of the country, and the leverage lands entirely on the post and the concrete around it. Posts get set deep enough to get below the seasonal moisture zone in the clay, in a concrete footing that is crowned at the top so water sheds away from the post instead of pooling at the base. Post spacing gets tightened where the run is exposed. On a long open run, thinking about a board-on-board or shadowbox pattern that lets some wind through is worth a conversation, because a solid fence is a sail.
Layout, Property Lines and Utilities
Before digging, utility locates get called in, because hitting a gas or communication line is both dangerous and expensive. We talk with you about where the property line actually is, and where a survey pin exists we use it. Neighbors, HOA rules and city requirements vary across the metro, and some cities and neighborhoods have height, setback or material rules and require a permit, so we check rather than assume. Grade changes get handled by either stepping the panels or racking them to follow the slope, and that is a decision to make together up front because the two look quite different when finished.
Repairs, Gates and Staining
Not every fence needs replacing. Leaning posts can often be reset or sistered, broken pickets and rails get swapped, and a sagging gate is usually a hardware and bracing problem rather than a whole gate problem. After a storm takes a section down, replacing that run and matching the existing fence is straightforward. New wood fences benefit from staining or sealing once the wood has dried enough to accept it, and that extends the life of the fence considerably in the Oklahoma sun. Shallow posts in expansive clay move with every wet and dry cycle, and then the wind finishes the job. Depth and footing get sized to the fence height and the soil rather than to whatever is fastest.

Footings get crowned at the top so water runs away from the post instead of pooling against it. Standing water at the base is what rots wood posts and rusts steel ones.
Gates built to keep swinging
Gates are the moving part and the part that gets abused. They get braced against sag and hung on hardware sized for the weight, so the gate still latches next year.
Lines and heights confirmed before digging
Property line, slope, and utility locates get sorted out before a hole goes in the ground. It is a lot cheaper to move a line on paper than after the concrete is set.

For the trades the Construction Industries Board does license, Jimmy has applications in progress and we will tell you that plainly rather than imply otherwise. Where a job requires a licensed plumber, electrician, or registered roofer, we bring in the right trade partner for that portion. Ask about your specific job and you will get a straight answer.
