Hail, Wind and the Oklahoma Roof Cycle
Spring storm season regularly puts damaging hail and high wind across the metro, and the result is that roofs in central Oklahoma often get replaced on storm cycles rather than on age alone. Hail damage looks like bruised, soft spots where the granules have been knocked off and the mat underneath is exposed, and it is not always visible from the ground. What Actually Causes Leaks
Most roof leaks are not shingle failures, they are flashing failures. The usual suspects are plumbing vent boots with a cracked rubber collar, step flashing where a roof meets a wall, chimney and skylight flashing, valleys, and low slope sections like a porch roof where a standard shingle was installed on a pitch it was never rated for. Ice damming is less of a factor here than up north, but wind driven rain absolutely is, and it will push water uphill under shingles at exposed edges. Finding the actual entry point matters, because water travels along framing and shows up on the ceiling far from where it got in.
The Rest of the Roof System
A roof is more than shingles. Underlayment is the second line of defense and ice and water membrane belongs in valleys and around penetrations. Drip edge at the eaves and rakes keeps water off the fascia. Ventilation, meaning intake at the soffit and exhaust at the ridge, keeps the attic from cooking in an Oklahoma summer and is directly tied to how long shingles last. Very few leaks come from the middle of a roof plane. They come from the transitions: valleys, penetrations, flashing, and edges. Central Oklahoma weather finds every one of them.
