Why Homeowners Make the Swap
Two reasons come up over and over. The first is safety. Stepping over a 14 to 16 inch tub wall onto a wet surface is the single most common way people get hurt in their own bathroom, and it is the reason a lot of homeowners quietly stop using the hall bath entirely. The second is that the tub simply never gets used. In a house with more than one bathroom, keeping one tub for resale and converting the other to a shower is a reasonable middle path, and it is the advice we give most often. If the house only has one bathtub and there are small children in the family, we will say so before you commit.
Working Inside the Existing Footprint
A standard alcove tub is about 60 inches long and 30 to 32 inches deep, which becomes a comfortable one-person shower without touching the surrounding walls. That is what keeps the conversion affordable relative to a full remodel: the framing, the door location, the vanity and the flooring outside the alcove can all stay. The tub drain sits at one end and shower drains normally sit centered, so the drain usually moves. On a slab house that means opening a small area of concrete, and on a pier and beam or second floor it means working from below or from inside the joist bay. Either way it is planned before demolition, not discovered during it.
Pan, Waterproofing and Wall Height
You can build the base as a sloped mortar bed with a membrane or use a preformed sloped pan, and both work when they are installed level, fully supported and sealed to the waterproofing above them. What does not work is treating cement board as waterproof, leaving corners and the curb untreated, or mixing incompatible products from different systems. We waterproof the alcove as a unit, detail the corners and drain, and take the membrane above the shower head rather than stopping at the old tub surround height, since spray reaches higher than most people expect. Everything gets checked before tile hides it.
Finishing the Converted Alcove
Once the shower is watertight the choices are cosmetic. Subway tile in a running bond is the most common and the most forgiving. Large-format porcelain means fewer grout lines and less scrubbing, which is worth thinking about given how hard the water is in much of the metro. A recessed niche gives you shelf space without an over-the-head caddy, blocking behind the tile lets grab bars go in now or later, and a bench makes the shower usable for someone who cannot stand for long. The alcove face and ceiling get patched, textured to match the rest of the room, and painted so the finished bathroom does not look like something was swapped out.

A shower fails behind the tile, not on it
Tile is the finish. Whether a bathroom is still sound in ten years is decided by the layers nobody ever sees, and by whether anyone bothered to lay the job out before cutting.
Backer board set in mortar and screwed down
Cement board over a subfloor needs a bed of mortar under it and to be fastened properly. Screwed down over an air gap, it flexes, and flex is what cracks grout and tile later.
Waterproofing behind the surface
Seams, corners, and changes of plane are where water gets in. Those get waterproofed before tile goes on. A shower that was never waterproofed can look perfect and still be rotting the wall behind it.
The layout gets planned before the first cut
Niches lined up to the tile joints, full tiles where the eye lands, and cuts pushed to the edges. A niche that was cut in as an afterthought is obvious forever, and it is the detail people complain about most.
Slope, drain, and grout done to spec
Pans get sloped to the drain so water actually leaves. Grout and sealant get the right product for a wet area, and the joints get the cure time they need before the shower goes back into use.
