Low-Curb Versus Curbless Showers
A low-curb shower keeps a short threshold, usually a few inches, which contains water easily and works in almost any existing bathroom. A curbless shower has no threshold at all, so a walker or wheelchair rolls straight in, but it requires the floor to be recessed or the whole bathroom floor to be built up so the shower can slope to the drain. On a slab-on-grade house, which describes most of the metro, that usually means either cutting and lowering the drain area or raising the finished floor across the room. Both are doable. We will tell you at the estimate which one your house actually supports and what it costs, instead of promising curbless and then changing the number later.
How the Shower Is Built
After demolition we check the framing and subfloor, correct anything soft or out of plane, and set blocking in the walls for grab bars, a bench and the shower valve. Then the pan goes in, sloped a quarter inch per foot to the drain so water does not pond. Walls get backer board, then a waterproofing membrane over the board with the corners, curb and drain flange detailed as their own step because that is where leaks start. We flood test before tile goes on. Tile is set, grouted, and the changes in plane at corners and the curb get flexible sealant rather than rigid grout so seasonal movement does not crack the joint.
Accessibility Details Worth Doing Now
The cheapest time to make a shower accessible is while the walls are open. Plywood blocking behind the tile costs very little and means a grab bar can be mounted anywhere on that wall later, at full strength, without hunting for a stud. A built-in bench or a fold-down seat, a hand-held shower on a slide bar, a niche set at reachable height rather than shoulder height, and a lever handle instead of a knob are all small decisions that add up to a shower somebody can still use in fifteen years. Slip resistance comes from smaller floor tile with more grout lines or a tile with a textured finish.
Glass, Doors and Open Entries
A walk-in shower can be finished with a frameless glass panel, a semi-frameless enclosure, a sliding door, or a wide open entry with no glass at all when the shower is deep enough that spray does not reach the room. Frameless glass looks the best and costs the most, and it needs walls that are plumb and square, which is a reason to care about how the framing and backer board went in. A shower fails behind the tile, not on it
Tile is the finish. Whether a bathroom is still sound in ten years is decided by the layers nobody ever sees, and by whether anyone bothered to lay the job out before cutting.
Backer board set in mortar and screwed down
Cement board over a subfloor needs a bed of mortar under it and to be fastened properly. Screwed down over an air gap, it flexes, and flex is what cracks grout and tile later.
Waterproofing behind the surface
Seams, corners, and changes of plane are where water gets in. Those get waterproofed before tile goes on. A shower that was never waterproofed can look perfect and still be rotting the wall behind it.
The layout gets planned before the first cut
Niches lined up to the tile joints, full tiles where the eye lands, and cuts pushed to the edges. A niche that was cut in as an afterthought is obvious forever, and it is the detail people complain about most.
Slope, drain, and grout done to spec
Pans get sloped to the drain so water actually leaves. Grout and sealant get the right product for a wet area, and the joints get the cure time they need before the shower goes back into use.
