Replace or Repair, Honestly Assessed
Not every ugly driveway needs to be torn out. Surface spalling, hairline cracking and stains on a slab that is still flat and well supported can often be handled as [repair and resurfacing](/services/concrete-repair) for much less money. Replacement is the right call when the slab has settled into steps you can catch a toe on, when large sections have broken into rubble, when tree roots have lifted whole panels, or when the original pour has no joints and has cracked randomly across its width. We will tell you which situation you are in at the estimate, including when the answer is that you can get several more years out of what you have.
Demolition, Grade and Base
Replacement starts with breaking out and hauling away the old slab, which is a real line item because concrete is heavy and disposal is not free. Then the subgrade gets attention. Soft or organic material comes out, low areas get filled with compactable material rather than loose dirt, and the whole area gets compacted in lifts. The finished grade is set so water runs away from the garage and the house, not toward it, with enough fall to shed a hard Oklahoma rain quickly. Getting the grade right is also what keeps water from getting under the slab, which is where clay soil does its worst work.
Thickness, Rebar and Joint Layout
Driveways get poured thicker than a walkway because of vehicle loads, and thicker still at the approach and anywhere a heavy truck, trailer or RV will sit. Reinforcement is placed on chairs so it ends up inside the slab where it can do its job. Joints are laid out on a grid sized to the slab thickness and cut early, and the panel shapes are kept close to square rather than long and narrow, since long skinny panels crack across the middle. Where the driveway meets the garage slab, the house, or the sidewalk, an isolation joint lets the two move independently instead of fighting each other.
Finish, Curing and When You Can Drive On It
A broom finish is standard on driveways because it gives traction when wet and hides minor imperfection. Edges get tooled, joints get cut, and the slab is cured rather than left to bake. Concrete continues gaining strength for weeks, so we will tell you when foot traffic is fine and when vehicles can go on it, and those are two different dates. Driving on a slab early is the fastest way to crack something you just paid for. Sealing after the initial cure period helps with de-icing salts, oil staining and the freeze and thaw swings that central Oklahoma runs through every winter.

The base gets prepped and compacted
A slab is only as good as what it sits on. Loose or uneven fill is why a driveway sinks at one corner two winters later. We excavate to depth, bring the base up in compacted lifts, and check it before any forms go in.
Steel goes in, not just wire mesh
Wire mesh laid on the ground and walked on during the pour ends up at the bottom of the slab doing nothing. Reinforcement has to sit in the middle of the concrete to do its job, and for driveways and anything carrying vehicle weight we set rebar on chairs.
Control joints cut where the slab needs them
Concrete is going to crack. The whole trade is deciding where. Joints get cut to the right depth and at the right spacing so the slab relieves itself along a clean line instead of across the middle of your patio.
Thickness and finish matched to the use
A patio and a driveway are not the same pour. Drives that take a truck get more thickness and more steel than a walkway does. You get told what the slab is spec'd at before it is poured, in writing.
