Reading the Damage Before Deciding
Hairline shrinkage cracks in an otherwise flat slab are cosmetic and normal. A crack with the two sides at different heights means the ground under one side has moved, and filling that crack without addressing the drainage just hides the problem until it opens again. Surface flaking and pitting, called spalling and scaling, usually comes from the surface being finished or cured poorly, from de-icing chemicals, or from freeze and thaw cycling, and it is often repairable because the concrete below the damaged skin is still good. Rubble, rocking panels and slabs that have dropped several inches are replacement candidates. The first thing we do at the estimate is figure out which category you are in.
Crack Repair and Joint Work
Cracks get cleaned out and, depending on width and movement, filled with a flexible polyurethane sealant or a rigid patching compound. Static cracks in a stable slab can be patched rigid. Cracks that open and close with the seasons, which is most of them in clay country, need a flexible material that can stretch instead of tearing loose the first cold snap. Existing control joints that have lost their sealant get cleaned and refilled, since open joints let water down under the slab where it undermines the base. Where a slab has pulled away from a house or a step, the isolation joint gets rebuilt rather than caulked over.
Resurfacing a Worn Slab
When a driveway or patio is structurally fine but the surface is pitted, stained or has lost its finish, an overlay can give you a new wearing surface without demolition. The existing slab is cleaned and profiled so the overlay bonds, damaged areas are repaired, and then a polymer-modified resurfacer goes over the top and can be finished smooth, broomed, or stamped with a pattern. Overlays are not a fix for structural cracking, and any crack in the base slab will eventually telegraph through, so we are upfront about that tradeoff. Where it fits, it is a fraction of the cost of a tear-out and pour.
Cleaning and Sealing
Sealing is the cheapest thing you can do for concrete and the most commonly skipped. A clean, sealed slab sheds water and oil instead of absorbing it, resists staining, and takes freeze and thaw cycling much better. The work is straightforward: pressure wash, treat oil and rust stains, let the slab dry fully, repair open cracks and joints, then apply sealer at the right rate for the surface. Over-applying sealer on a broom finish leaves it slick and can cloud, so it goes on thin and even. Covering cracks and resealing is a routine part of keeping a driveway or patio looking new for years longer than it otherwise would.

Central Oklahoma soil shifts and settles, and concrete moves with it. Slabs do not fail because concrete is weak, they fail because nobody planned for that movement. Here is what we do about it.
The base gets prepped and compacted
A slab is only as good as what it sits on. Loose or uneven fill is why a driveway sinks at one corner two winters later. We excavate to depth, bring the base up in compacted lifts, and check it before any forms go in.
Steel goes in, not just wire mesh
Wire mesh laid on the ground and walked on during the pour ends up at the bottom of the slab doing nothing. Reinforcement has to sit in the middle of the concrete to do its job, and for driveways and anything carrying vehicle weight we set rebar on chairs.
Control joints cut where the slab needs them
Concrete is going to crack. The whole trade is deciding where. Joints get cut to the right depth and at the right spacing so the slab relieves itself along a clean line instead of across the middle of your patio.
Thickness and finish matched to the use
A patio and a driveway are not the same pour. Drives that take a truck get more thickness and more steel than a walkway does. You get told what the slab is spec'd at before it is poured, in writing.
