How Stamped Concrete Is Made

Color comes either from integral pigment mixed into the truck, which colors the concrete all the way through, or from a color hardener broadcast onto the surface, which gives a denser and more durable wearing surface. A release agent goes down to keep the stamps from sticking and to add secondary color variation. Then the mats are pressed in sequence while the slab is in a narrow window of workability, which is why stamping is timed work and why crew size and weather matter on a stamp day.
Patterns and Color Choices
Common patterns include ashlar slate, random stone, cobblestone, running bond brick and wood plank. Border patterns in a different mat, like a soldier course of brick around a slate field, make a patio look designed rather than poured. Color is usually a base plus a contrasting accent from the release, and the honest guidance is to look at real installed work in daylight rather than picking from a small sample chip, because color reads differently across a large area. We can also do simpler decorative work such as saw-cut patterns, exposed aggregate and stained finishes when a full stamp is more than the project needs.
Where Stamped Concrete Makes Sense
Stamped work is most popular on patios, pool decks, walkways, entries and driveway aprons. It costs more per square foot than a broom finish because of the color, the mats, the labor at pour time and the sealing, so a common approach is to stamp the patio or the visible entry area and keep the utility areas plain. On a driveway the pattern will show tire scuffing over time and needs resealing more often, which is worth knowing before you commit the whole drive to it. Under a covered patio, stamped concrete stays cleaner and the color holds longer because it is out of direct sun.
Sealing and Long Term Care
Sealer is what keeps stamped color looking the way it did the week it was poured, and it is the one maintenance item that actually matters. In central Oklahoma the combination of full summer sun, freeze and thaw cycles in winter and blowing grit is hard on a sealed surface, so plan on resealing periodically rather than once. Sealed stamped concrete can be slick when wet, so on pool decks and steps we add a grit additive to the sealer. Cleaning is simple: rinse it, and use a mild cleaner rather than acid or harsh degreaser, which can dull the color.

The base gets prepped and compacted
A slab is only as good as what it sits on. Loose or uneven fill is why a driveway sinks at one corner two winters later. We excavate to depth, bring the base up in compacted lifts, and check it before any forms go in.
Steel goes in, not just wire mesh
Wire mesh laid on the ground and walked on during the pour ends up at the bottom of the slab doing nothing. Reinforcement has to sit in the middle of the concrete to do its job, and for driveways and anything carrying vehicle weight we set rebar on chairs.
Control joints cut where the slab needs them
Concrete is going to crack. The whole trade is deciding where. Joints get cut to the right depth and at the right spacing so the slab relieves itself along a clean line instead of across the middle of your patio.
Thickness and finish matched to the use
A patio and a driveway are not the same pour. Drives that take a truck get more thickness and more steel than a walkway does. You get told what the slab is spec'd at before it is poured, in writing.
