Laying Out a Patio That Fits How You Use It
Before we talk about concrete, it helps to talk about furniture. A grill, a table with chairs that pull out, a seating group and a walking path around all of it need more room than most people estimate on paper, and the most common regret with a new patio is that it came out too small. We lay the shape out on the ground with paint or string so you can walk it, set a chair in it, and see the size in real space. Extensions off an existing slab are common, and the joint between old and new gets treated as an isolation joint so the two slabs can move independently instead of cracking each other.
Drainage Away From the House
A patio poured flat, or worse, poured with a slight fall toward the house, sends every hard rain straight to your foundation. Every slab gets a deliberate slope away from the structure, enough to move water without feeling tilted underfoot. Where a patio sits below grade or a downspout dumps next to it, we plan where that water goes before pouring, whether that means a swale, extending the downspout, or adding a channel drain. In clay soil this is not a detail, it is the whole ballgame, because water that collects under a slab is what causes the settling and cracking homeowners blame on the concrete itself.
Base, Joints and Reinforcement
Patio construction follows the same rules as any flatwork: strip to stable subgrade, bring in and compact base material in lifts, place reinforcement inside the slab rather than on the dirt, and cut control joints on a sensible grid so shrinkage cracking happens in a straight line you planned instead of a jagged one you did not. On patios the joint layout is also a design element, since the panel grid is visible in the finished surface. We lay the joints out to relate to the shape of the patio and the house rather than dropping an arbitrary grid on top of it.
Finishes, Borders and Extras
A broom finish is practical and inexpensive. A smooth or lightly textured finish looks better under a covered patio where traction is less of a concern. Borders in a contrasting pattern or a saw-cut band around the perimeter dress a plain slab up for very little cost. We can also form steps, a small stoop or a stepping stool section at a grade change, matched to the same pattern and color as the main patio so it reads as one piece of work.

Central Oklahoma soil shifts and settles, and concrete moves with it. Slabs do not fail because concrete is weak, they fail because nobody planned for that movement. Here is what we do about it.
The base gets prepped and compacted
A slab is only as good as what it sits on. Loose or uneven fill is why a driveway sinks at one corner two winters later. We excavate to depth, bring the base up in compacted lifts, and check it before any forms go in.
Steel goes in, not just wire mesh
Wire mesh laid on the ground and walked on during the pour ends up at the bottom of the slab doing nothing. Reinforcement has to sit in the middle of the concrete to do its job, and for driveways and anything carrying vehicle weight we set rebar on chairs.
Control joints cut where the slab needs them
Concrete is going to crack. The whole trade is deciding where. Joints get cut to the right depth and at the right spacing so the slab relieves itself along a clean line instead of across the middle of your patio.
Thickness and finish matched to the use
A patio and a driveway are not the same pour. Drives that take a truck get more thickness and more steel than a walkway does. You get told what the slab is spec'd at before it is poured, in writing.

For the trades the Construction Industries Board does license, Jimmy has applications in progress and we will tell you that plainly rather than imply otherwise. Where a job requires a licensed plumber, electrician, or registered roofer, we bring in the right trade partner for that portion. Ask about your specific job and you will get a straight answer.
