What’s Involved in a Durable Shower Tile Installation?

We start by removing old fiberglass or damaged tile down to the studs. A cement backer board is installed, sealed with a liquid membrane, and a sloped pan is set to direct water to the drain. Porcelain or natural stone tiles are then set with mortar, leaving no gaps for water to seep. Grout is applied with a fine brush to minimize cracks. Every step is done to prevent mold and water damage, which are common in Oklahoma’s heavy clay soils and freeze-thaw cycles.

How Do Oklahoma’s Weather and Soil Affect Your Shower Tile?

Oklahoma’s expanding clay soil and sudden temperature swings can stress bathroom structures. A poorly sealed shower allows moisture to wick into walls, causing rot and mold. We use heavy-duty waterproofing membranes and slope the floor to handle ice melt and monsoon rains. Porcelain tiles are denser than ceramic, resisting cracks from thermal shifts. Natural stone is sealed to repel moisture and prevent staining from hard water common in the OKC metro.

Why Choose Porcelain or Natural Stone for Your Shower?

Porcelain tiles are non-porous, so soap scum and mildew won’t stick. They’re perfect for high-moisture areas and mimic the look of natural stone without the sealing maintenance. For a premium finish, we install natural stone like slate or travertine, which we seal to resist Oklahoma’s hard water. Both materials handle hail-sized hailstones and daily use better than fiberglass, which cracks and yellows over time. Your choice depends on your style and how much you want the shower to last.

Can You Add Custom Features Like Niches or Benches?

Yes. We build niches into the shower walls for shampoo bottles, small benches for sitting, and block in areas for grab bars if needed. These features are framed before tiling so they’re structurally sound. A bench requires a sloped base to drain water away, while niches are deep enough to hold items without water pooling. Everything is tiled seamlessly to match your design. These upgrades make showers safer and more functional, especially in homes near Edmond or Norman where accessibility is a priority.

Who Handles the Waterproofing and Structural Prep?

Jimmy Garces Jr. and his team handle every step, from tearing out old tile to setting the final grout line. We don’t subcontract – that’s how we ensure the backer board is fully sealed and the pan slopes correctly. Our process includes a 24-hour water test before tiling to catch leaks. With over a decade of doing showers in Midwest City, Del City, and Yukon, we know the hidden challenges of building on Oklahoma’s reactive soils. You get one contractor who stays until the job is perfect.

A shower fails behind the tile, not on it

Tile is the finish. Whether a bathroom is still sound in ten years is decided by the layers nobody ever sees, and by whether anyone bothered to lay the job out before cutting.

  • Backer board set in mortar and screwed down

Cement board over a subfloor needs a bed of mortar under it and to be fastened properly. Screwed down over an air gap, it flexes, and flex is what cracks grout and tile later.

  • Waterproofing behind the surface

Seams, corners, and changes of plane are where water gets in. Those get waterproofed before tile goes on. A shower that was never waterproofed can look perfect and still be rotting the wall behind it.

  • The layout gets planned before the first cut

Niches lined up to the tile joints, full tiles where the eye lands, and cuts pushed to the edges. A niche that was cut in as an afterthought is obvious forever, and it is the detail people complain about most.

  • Slope, drain, and grout done to spec

Pans get sloped to the drain so water actually leaves. Grout and sealant get the right product for a wet area, and the joints get the cure time they need before the shower goes back into use.

Letting someone you found online into your house

It is a fair thing to be careful about, and we would rather answer it straight than talk around it. Shekinah Renovations is a newer company name. Jimmy is not new to the trade. He started at fourteen, learned it from his stepdad, and has been doing this work ever since.

  • Every photo and video on this site is Jimmy's own work around the OKC metro. None of it is stock.
  • We will put you in touch with people we have done work for. Ask on the walkthrough.
  • Oklahoma does not issue a general contractor or remodeler license, so for most of what we do there is no state license to hold. Where a trade is licensed, we say so and bring in the right partner.
  • The estimate is free and written down. You know the number, and the scope, before anything starts.
  • The person who quotes your job is the person who shows up to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We come out, look at the work, and give you a written price at no charge. You are not signed up for anything by asking.

We do not publish flat prices because no two jobs are the same. Square footage, materials, access, and what we find behind the walls all change the number. Call or text (405) 532-3348 and we will come out and price your actual job.

Small repairs can often be fit in within a few days. Larger remodels start once the estimate is approved and materials are in. Call or text and we will give you a real date rather than a guess.

Yes. Jimmy Garces Jr. is on the job, not just at the sales call. That is also why we can handle several trades on one project instead of handing you off between companies.

The Oklahoma City metro plus about an hour's drive in any direction: Oklahoma City, Edmond, Moore, Norman, Yukon, Mustang, Midwest City, Del City, Bethany, Warr Acres and the smaller towns around them. If you are past that ring, call or text anyway. A job can still be worth the drive.

Fair question, and it is the one we would ask too. Shekinah Renovations is a newer company, but Jimmy is not new to the trade. He started at fourteen, learned it from his stepdad, and has been doing this work ever since. Every photo and video on this site is his own work around the metro, not stock, and we are glad to put you in touch with people we have worked for. He is also the one who shows up for the estimate and the one on site while the work happens.

Oklahoma does not issue a general contractor or remodeler license, so for most of what we do there is no state license to hold. For the trades the Construction Industries Board does license, Jimmy has applications in progress and we will tell you that plainly rather than imply otherwise. Where a job requires a licensed plumber, electrician, or registered roofer, we bring in the right trade partner for that portion. Ask about your specific job and you will get a straight answer.

Usually the same day. Call or text (405) 532-3348 and it reaches Jimmy directly. If he is on a job site with his hands full he will get back to you as soon as he is off it. Most people call two or three contractors and hire whoever actually answers, so we try to be that one.
