Choosing the Right Floor for the Room

Subfloor Prep Is Where Floors Are Won or Lost
Almost every flooring complaint traces back to what was under the floor. Slab-on-grade houses across the metro move with the clay soil, so slabs are rarely flat, and every floating floor has a flatness tolerance that the manufacturer will point to if a claim ever gets filed. We check the substrate with a straightedge, grind high spots, fill low spots with a patching or self-leveling compound, and address moisture before anything goes down. On wood subfloors we re-fasten loose panels to kill squeaks, replace water damaged sections, and check for deflection when tile is going in, because tile over a flexing floor cracks at the grout first.
Acclimation, Expansion and Oklahoma Humidity
Oklahoma runs from humid summers to dry heated winters, and wood based flooring responds to that by expanding and contracting through the year. That is why hardwood and laminate get acclimated in the house before installation and why every floating floor needs a consistent expansion gap at every wall, cabinet toe kick, pipe and door jamb. Floors that buckle in July almost always got installed tight to a wall in January. Vinyl plank moves too, less than wood but enough that a floor run tight against a fireplace hearth will peak in the middle of summer. Getting these gaps right costs nothing at install time and is impossible to fix afterward.
Tear-Out, Transitions and Trim
Removing the old floor is part of the job. Carpet and pad come up with the tack strip, glued vinyl gets scraped, and old tile and thinset get chipped off the slab, which is the dustiest and slowest part of any flooring project. New floors need transitions where they meet other rooms, other flooring types or exterior doors, and those pieces get chosen so the height change is not a trip hazard. Base and shoe molding get removed and reinstalled, or replaced, so the finished floor has a clean edge instead of a bead of caulk. Door bottoms get trimmed where the new floor sits higher than the old.

Most flooring complaints are not about the flooring. They are about the surface it went down on and the prep that got skipped to hit a price.
The subfloor gets checked and fixed first
Soft spots, squeaks, water damage, and high or low areas do not go away under new flooring, they telegraph through it. We find them before anything is laid and tell you what the repair costs before we proceed.
Flat, within tolerance
Plank and tile both have flatness requirements. Laid over a floor that is out of tolerance, plank flexes at the seams and tile cracks or ends up with lippage. Where a floor needs leveling, it gets leveled.
Moisture handled on slabs
Concrete gives off moisture, and it will ruin a floor from underneath. Slab installs get the underlayment and moisture barrier the material calls for.
Transitions, trim, and expansion done properly
Floating floors need room to move at the walls or they buckle. Transitions between rooms and materials get real trim rather than a strip of filler, and quarter round goes back so the edges look finished.

Oklahoma does not issue a general contractor or remodeler license, so for most of what we do there is no state license to hold. For the trades the Construction Industries Board does license, Jimmy has applications in progress and we will tell you that plainly rather than imply otherwise. Where a job requires a licensed plumber, electrician, or registered roofer, we bring in the right trade partner for that portion. Ask about your specific job and you will get a straight answer.
